A typical day in the metro system in Milan. At the platform, the train halted with a faint squeak. A surge of individuals streamed inside the car when the doors opened.
A woman in her sixties was one of the new passengers. Bright lipstick, a long coat, high shoes, and a stern look. “Make room for me,” she said, holding a bulky leather bag on her shoulder.
She knocked her knee with a young man seated by the window as she pushed her way through the crowded area. He didn’t even look up from where he was sitting. The woman abruptly stopped and whirled around, perhaps only understanding that she was being “ignored.”
She yelled, “Of course, sitting like a boss, right?” People are virtually doing splits because of you, don’t you see that? Your parents taught you to yield your seat to seniors, didn’t they?
The boy looked up slowly. He was still wearing his earbuds. He took them off calmly and gazed at her, unfrightened or irritated. Just a calm, focused stare.
— I am speaking to you! — the woman almost let out a cry. — Is respecting an adult woman really so difficult? Or do you believe you are in charge of this place?
The train car plunged into a thick hush. Everyone pivoted. Two adolescents in the area obviously anticipated a confrontation—the usual: impolite response, dispute, and possibly even security issues.
Nobody anticipated the boy’s behavior.
He rose to his feet and said dignifiedly but calmly:
Who really needs this seat, please? You stood there in high heels with confidence, Madam. I’ll give it up because I was raised to help, not to embarrass, not because you ask me to.
He added as he turned to face the rest of the vehicle:
— Is there anyone here that has to sit because they are elderly, pregnant, or just plain exhausted?
An old man with a cane was standing close to the door. He lifted his hand a little. The boy came over and led him to the chair. The elderly man smiled warmly at him and nodded appreciatively.
The gray-clad woman stood silently. She was at a loss for words. She was abruptly uncertain, as evidenced by the drop in her eyes.
Silently, the boy moved to the opposite side of the vehicle. A girl gestured for him to take her seat, but he politely declined while maintaining a restrained smile:
Allow someone who genuinely struggles to stand to sit.
The rest of the travel went smoothly. There was a gentle air of reverence, as if something positive had subtly reminded everyone of itself. There was no rustling or anxiety.
The woman turned and gave the boy another look as she got off the train.
Her eyes were not irritated this time. Instead, a little perplexity. Or even a hint of admiration.
