I was perplexed when I identified the young girl I saw at my grandfather’s funeral standing close to the casket.
For me, the occasion of my grandfather’s death was especially painful. He used to tell me, “When I’m gone, you’ll see a rainbow in the sky, and you’ll know I’m watching over you,” whenever I spent my childhood vacations at his house. I used to find solace in those words, but today they reverberated in my head in a painful way.
My life had been so preoccupied with work, responsibilities, and personal issues over the previous five years that I hadn’t made the time to see him. “I’ll go next month,” I would tell myself each time. It was already too late. I stood, remorseful, in front of his casket.
After everyone had departed, I spotted a young child, perhaps four years old. She appeared disoriented, as though she was unaware of what was happening. I was curious, so I went to ask my mother who she was. She was unknown to my mother.
With some hesitation, I approached the young girl and inquired, “What’s your name? Are you by yourself? Where are your parents?
It was almost time to go when she failed to respond. I couldn’t simply abandon her in the graveyard. I thus proposed to bring her along, and we would subsequently assist her in locating her parents.
The neighbor came out to welcome us as we got to my grandfather’s house. “Ah, you found Zoé!” she said when she saw the girl.
We were genuinely taken aback when she disclosed Zoé’s name.
After noticing Zoé, the neighbor went on to say, “Zoé is… your grandfather’s daughter.”
I gazed at her, perplexed and unable to fully comprehend.
Clearly astonished, my mother said nothing.
With some trembling in her voice, the neighbor went on: “It was a long-standing hidden connection.
She is your grandfather’s daughter, even if he never mentioned it.
For a minute, the world appeared to pause.
This was something my granddad had never, ever mentioned.
How could the whole family have been spared such a thing?
Zoé remained mute and gazed at the scene with wide, naive eyes, seemingly unable to comprehend the enormity of what her presence had just shattered.
