After thirty years of marriage, what was meant to be a joyful anniversary celebration turned into something no one expected š²š±
The hall echoed with applause. Glasses clinked, guests smiled, cameras flashed. At the center table sat the couple ā three decades together behind them.
The husband stood with a microphone, looking confident, almost pleased with himself.
ā Friends, ā he began with a grin, ā you all know my wife. Quiet, modest⦠maybe a little too quiet.
Laughter rippled through the room.
She sat beside him, hands folded in her lap, expression unreadable.
ā Sheās always been a decent homemaker, ā he continued. ā Though, honestly, not the easiest personality. If it werenāt for me, who knows where sheād be?
More laughter. A few approving nods.
He kissed her cheek theatrically.
ā Iāve put up with her moods for thirty years. I guess that makes me a hero.
Applause. Someone shouted, āBravo!ā
He raised his glass.

ā When I first met her, there wasnāt much competition. Just a simple girl from the provinces ā no money, no connections, nothing special. Without me, sheād have stayed invisible.
This time the laughter was more hesitant.
ā I shaped her. I dressed her well, introduced her to society. Look at her now ā pearls, elegance. All thanks to me.
Leaning closer, he added:
ā I even tolerate the wrinkles, the extra weight, the snoring. And still, I stay loyal. With all the young women around me! Iām admirable, arenāt I?
Some guests laughed loudly. Others shifted uncomfortably.
Through it all, his wife remained silent. No tears. No outburst. Only the faint tremble of her fingers.
Then she gently placed her hand over his and lowered the microphone.
ā Now itās my turn, ā she said quietly.
The room fell into complete silence.
She took the microphone.
ā Thirty years ago, I married a man who promised respect and protection. For years, I kept quiet when he mocked me in front of others. I kept quiet when he belittled me. I kept quiet when he said I was nothing without him.
Guests avoided eye contact.
ā What you donāt know is that for the past five years, Iāve been the one supporting this family. When his business failed, I sold my apartment to cover the debts. When he lost everything, I worked nights to keep us afloat.
The husbandās face drained of color.
ā And the truth is⦠without me, he wouldnāt know where heād be today. Iāve been the one saving him all this time.
The silence in the hall grew heavy.

ā But tonight, Iāve decided I wonāt save anyone anymore.
She slipped off her wedding ring and placed it calmly on the table.
ā Thank you for the anniversary. For me, this is the last evening as your wife.
She stood and walked toward the exit. No applause. No laughter.
Only stunned silence.
