The daughters-in-law, eager to secure the inheritance, decided to dispose of their blind mother-in-law by abandoning her deep in a deserted forest, certain no one would ever discover her. They assumed she wouldn’t even realize what was happening, since she had been blind since birth. What they failed to consider was that years of darkness had sharpened her hearing and instincts.
After her husband passed away, everything had been left to her — the house, the land, the savings. From that moment on, the daughters-in-law’s behavior turned distant and insincere.
That day, they told her they were taking her out for some fresh air. She quietly got into the car, though unease tightened in her chest. The drive felt too long, and none of the sounds around her were familiar.
When the car finally stopped, she sensed something was wrong. The door opened, and she was roughly pulled out. Leaves and broken twigs crunched beneath her feet.
“We’re here. Stay put. No one will ever find you,” they whispered coldly.
The door slammed. The engine started. The car disappeared.
Alone in the dark forest, the old woman shivered as the wind pierced through her thin clothes. Strange noises echoed around her — snapping branches, rustling leaves. Then she heard a howl. Distant at first. Then nearer. Closer still.
Her heart pounded. Footsteps approached. She felt warm breath brush her cheek. Wolves. They were right there.
She quietly said her goodbyes in her mind and began to pray, bracing herself for the end. But instead of teeth sinking into her skin, she felt something warm press gently against her side. Then another body beside her.
The wolves encircled her and lay down close, their thick fur shielding her from the cold wind. Their steady breathing no longer sounded threatening — it felt protective. All night, they stayed.
At dawn, sunlight warmed her face. The forest was silent. The wolves were gone.
Slowly, she rose and moved forward, feeling her way along tree trunks and branches. She stumbled many times but kept going. By evening, she felt smooth pavement beneath her feet. Passing drivers finally noticed the elderly woman standing alone on the road and stopped to help.
The people who had left her to die for the sake of money never imagined that, on that night, the wild animals had shown more humanity than they had.
