Two homeless siblings inherited their poor grandmother’s old mountain house — but when they stepped inside, they discovered something waiting for them that changed their lives forever. 🫣😨
The letter arrived on a rainy Tuesday morning. The envelope was wrinkled and damp, and Alex almost tossed it away with the rest of the junk mail.
He and his younger sister Marta had been sleeping behind a supermarket for nearly a month. Sometimes they stacked old boxes between the wall and the garbage bins just to block the wind. Letters rarely came for them, and when they did, it was usually bills or warnings. But this envelope looked different — thick, white, with their names printed neatly on the front.
“Alex… look,” Marta whispered, brushing her hair away from her face. “It says it’s from a lawyer.”
Alex frowned.
Their grandmother had died two months earlier in a small district hospital. They hadn’t even managed to visit her before she passed away. They had no money for the trip, and there were no relatives willing to help them.
Their grandmother had always lived simply. After their mother died, she moved into the mountains and lived alone in an old wooden house. She never talked about money or anything like an inheritance.
Alex carefully opened the envelope. Inside was an official letter from a lawyer named Mr. Carter.
He read the first lines, paused, and then read them again.
According to the document, he and Marta were the only heirs to their grandmother’s property in the mountains.
“What property?” Marta asked, confused.
Alex slowly lifted his head.
“Her house in the mountains.”
Three days later, they stood on a narrow road leading into the forest.
The bus had taken them only to a small village at the foot of the mountains, and they had to walk the rest of the way. The air smelled of wet earth and pine trees, and fog drifted quietly through the woods.
Marta held her brother’s hand tightly.
“I remember this place,” she said softly. “Grandma used to make apple jam on the veranda.”
Through the fog, the house slowly appeared. It looked old and abandoned. The wooden walls were dark with age, some roof panels were missing, and the porch leaned slightly to one side. The windows were dark.
The house looked poor — but now it belonged to them.
The lawyer was already waiting near the gate.
Dressed in a neat coat and holding a folder, he seemed uncomfortable standing in front of the two thin teenagers.
“Your grandmother made everything very clear,” he said, adjusting his glasses. “This house now belongs to both of you.”
He handed Alex a set of old brass keys.
Marta squeezed her brother’s hand even tighter. The keys felt surprisingly heavy.
Alex stepped forward and unlocked the door.
And at that moment, they realized their grandmother hadn’t left them just a simple old house. 😱😲
As they began looking around inside, Alex noticed a loose floorboard. It shifted slightly, as if someone had lifted it before. He knelt down, ran his fingers along the edge, and carefully pried it open with a knife.
The board lifted easily. Beneath it was a metal box.
Marta held her breath as Alex pulled it out. The box was heavier than it looked. When he opened the lid, both of them froze.
Inside were neatly stacked bundles of money, several important documents, and an old envelope.
On the envelope were the words: “For Alex and Marta.”
Alex slowly unfolded the letter. The handwriting was unmistakably their grandmother’s.
“If you are reading this letter, it means you found the house. I always feared that life might become difficult for you one day. I couldn’t leave you great wealth, but there is enough here to help you start a new life. This house has always been your true home. Take care of it — and take care of each other.”
Marta quietly wiped away her tears. Alex stared at the letter for a long moment before looking around at the worn wooden walls of the house.
For the first time in a very long time, they realized they would no longer be sleeping on the street.
They finally had a home.
