My 10-Year-Old Locked Herself in the Bathroom Every Day — Until I Found What She Was Hiding in the Drain

My 10-year-old daughter rushed to the bathroom every single day after school and locked the door, insisting she “just liked being clean.”

At first, I believed her. But it became a ritual — no snack, no hello, just straight to the bathroom and the click of the lock. The explanation sounded rehearsed.

Then one evening the bathtub clogged. While cleaning the drain, I pulled out something that made my blood run cold — a piece of light blue plaid fabric. It matched Emma’s school skirt. There was a brownish stain on it.

Clothes don’t end up inside a drain by accident.

Panicked, I called the school. After a long pause, the secretary said quietly, “Mrs. Miller… please come in right away. You’re not the first parent to call about a child who starts washing immediately after school.”

At the school, the principal and psychologist explained everything.

Older students had created a secret online group. They gave younger kids daily “challenges.” At first harmless — wear mismatched socks, stay silent all day. Then stranger: lock yourself in the bathroom for a set time, dirty part of your uniform and hide it, keep a secret from your parents.

The children earned points to join an exclusive group called “The Chosen.”

Emma hadn’t been physically hurt — but she had been participating. Her bathroom trips weren’t about cleanliness. She was completing tasks and hiding evidence.

When I saw her, she wouldn’t meet my eyes.

“It’s just a game, Mom,” she whispered. “Everyone wanted to be included.”

That’s when I realized the scariest truth of all: sometimes children will hide anything — even from their parents — just to feel like they belong.
